Indian gooseberry rice or Amla rice or Nellikka rice.

Amla is a fruit which is very good  for its health benifits. It is a good source of vitamin c, and also good for people with diabetics, cancer due to its anti- oxidants. It slows down aging process, good for cold and cough.  It has many health benifits. It has been a common ingredient in the ancient Indian medicinal practice of Ayurveda.

Amla is slightly sweet, sour and bitter in taste. Amla rice ia an easy variety rice that can be made with in few minutes. Let us see how to make this rice.

 

Preparation time approx 20 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 1 cup raw rice ( we can use basmati or sona masoori rice )
  • 5 amla
  • 6 to 7 green chillies ( adjust according to your taste.
  • 4 tbsp grated coconut. ( you can reduce the amount of coconut  or avoid if you  are health conscious  ). I have added coconut for better taste.
  • 4 tbsp ground nut.
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder.
  • salt to taste.

For seasoning.

  • 4 tbsp thil oil. ( use any oil of your choice. thil oil will taste good)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds.
  • 1/2 tsp channa daal.
  • 1/2 tsp urad daal,
  • 1 red chilly
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida.
  • few curry leaves.

Method.

Cook the rice grainy. Do not make it mushy.

Cut the amla’s in to pieces.

Crush the amlas, green chillies and grated coconut and keep aside.

Heat the oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When it started crackling add ground nut and fry for few seconds.  Now add  both channa and urad daal. Let it become brown. Now add broken red chilly. Mix well . Add asafoetida and curry leaves. Add the gooseberry and cocnut mixture. Fry for 1 or 2 miutes.  Add turmeric powder and salt.Mix well.

Now add cooked rice and mix well. Switch off the stove and serve.
