Killi Sambar.

Killi sambar is made with green and red chillies. We are not using sambar powder to make this yummy side dish for idli, dosa, rice etc. We can make this sambar in pressure cooker with in 10 minutes. Today I made killi sambar as a side dish for my little millet idly. Let us see how to make this yummy sambar.

Preparation time approx 10 to 15 minutes.

Ingredients.

1/3 cup thuar daal.

2 big size well ripped tomatoes.

10 chopped shallots.

2 small pod garlic

4 green chillies ( adjust the spice level as per your taste)

6 red chillies.

1 tbsp tamarind paste.

1/4 spoon asafotedia/ small piece stone asafoetida

1/2 tsp turmeric powder.

Salt to taste

1 tbsp coconut oil ( use any oil of your choice)

1/4 tsp methi seeds.

1/2 tsp mustard seeds.

Few chopped curry leaves.

Few chopped coriander leaves .

Method.

In a pressure cooker add washed thuar daal, tomatoes , garlic,asafotedia, turmeric powder and green chillies. . Add 1 and half cup water and pressure cook for 4 whistles.

In the meantime in a kadai add oil and heat. Put mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Add methi seeds , curry leaves and red chillies. . Fry it and add chopped shallots. Fry till its colour changes. Add little turmeric powder. Add 1 cup of water and tamarind paste. Now add salt for the sambar. Let the shallots cook nicely.

Open the cooker. Mash the daal and tomatoes with a beater or put in mixi and grind.

Add this to the gravy. Add water if needed to get desired consistency. Let it boil nicely. Add chopped curry leaves and coriander leaves.

Serve the hot sambar with any tiffin or rice.
