Vazhapoo, mochai koottu kuzhambu.

This koottu kuzhambu is a very traditional method  of gravy which can go well with rice  dosa ,idly or any bfast items.

Vazhapoo or banana flower offers numerous health benefits. It is a good   source of fiber. Vazhapoo  is good for digestion and improves cholesterol problems. Mochai or field beans are  rich in  plant based protein and good for weight loss. This koottu kuzhambu  will be little gravy type kuzhambu. ( curry).

Let us see how to make this koottu kuzhambu. 

Preparation time  approx. 30 to 40 minutes.

Ingredients

1 cup chopped vazhapoo (banana flower.)

3/4 cup fresh mochai( field beans)

1/2 cup cooked thuar daal

3 tbsp tamarind water.( thick).

1/2 tsp turmeric powder.

Salt to taste.

Few chopped curry leaves.

For frying

1 tsp pepper

1. 1/2  tbsp channa daal

1 1/2 tbsp urad daal

2 tbsp coriander seeds

8 red chillies or as per your taste.

2 tbsp grated coconut.

Seasoning

2 tbsp coconut oil.

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp channa daal.

1 tsp urad daal

Few curry leaves

3 tbsp grated fresh coconut.

1 /2 tsp asafoetida.

Method

In a pan dry fry pepper, channa and urad daal,  coriander seeds,   red chillies.  Let them roast nicely.  Add grated fresh  coconut.  Fry for few more minutes

  Switch off  the stove. Let it cool.  Powder all these and keep.

In the mean time cook tuar daal and keep.

Pressure cook mochai with little salt. ( if you are using dry one soak over night and cook)

In a kadai add washed banana flower or vazhapoo.  Add a cup of water. Add salt and turmeric powder. Cook well. Add cooked mochai. Now add  2 tbsp tamarind juice.  Add enough water to cook. When it is boiled add cooked daal and powdered masala. Adjust water consistency.  It should not be very thick or thin. Little liquid consistency. 

Let everything cook . Check the salt and if needed add now.

Heat coconut oil. Add mustard seeds.  When it started crackling add channa and urad daal. Let it become brown.  Add coconut.  Let it become brown.  Add chopped curry leaves and asafoetida.  Fry well and pour over the curry.

Optional.  If you dont want coconut add less when you are doing seasoning.
