Matta aval vilayichathu/nanachathu

This traditional evening snack from Kerala is made with jaggery and coconut.  We need not cook. When we were young my amma used to make this as an evening snack. It is very easy and yummy too. This you can make with white aval Also.

It will be more tasty with Matta can use sugar also instead of jaggery.

Preparation time 15 minutes


1 cup Matta aval
1/4 cup jaggery powder. Adjust according to taste.
1/ 2 cup fresh grated coconut.
Little warm water.
Cardomom powder a pinch  optional.


In a bowl add aval . Add half of the coconut and jaggery. Mix with fingers.  Water will come from coconut. It will be moisture. Add balance coconut and jaggery and Cardomom.  Mix well for 1 minutes. If it is dry sprinkle very little warm water. Keep aside for 15 minutes. Use it.

If you are using sugar you add 6 to 7 tbsp sugar.
