Idly Samabr

There are many method of making sambar. Today I am giving you sambar recipe which we get in restaurant style.I have not used tamarind to make this sambar. I replaced tamarind with tomatoes.I made small idly’s and pour over sambar. My idly was floating in hot sambar. It is very wasy to make this sambar. Let us see how to make this.

Preparation time 25 to 30 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 6 or 8 mini Idly’s
  • 1/2 cup thuar dal
  • 3 big tomatoes.
  • 1/2 tsp Asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder.
  • 3 tbsp sambar powder.
  • 8 small onion cut in to pieces.
  • 1 big drumstick cut in to long pieces.
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • few curry leaves.
  • few chopped dhaniya leaves
for seasoning.
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seed.

 

For garnishing

  • chopped onions and dhaniya leaves.
Method.
Pressure cook  thuar dal,  asafoetida, tomatoes and turmeric powder adding enough water. cook and keep aside.
Heat a pan add a pinch of saunf means 8 or 9 not more than this.dry fry.
Powder the saunf and sambar powder.
Add little water and make this in to a paste.
Heat ghee in a pan.
Add mustard seeds.Let it crackle.
Add curry leaves.
Add onions .Saute for a minute on slow fire.
Add drumstick pieces.  Add water and salt. cook well.
Mash or grind dal and tomatoes very well.
Add this to curry.
Add sambar powder liquid.
Add water and adjust the consistency of the gravy.
Add chopped  dhaniya leaves.
Let it boil well.

How to serve.
In a plate spread some mini idly’s.

Pour enough hot  sambar over the idlies.

  1. Great share. In summer I substitute tamarind with green raw mangoes. It also works great.
