Uppuma kozhukkattai

Uppuma kozhukkattai is one of the popular tiffin item in south india. It is easy to make this. I love to have this with mango chutney. Sambar is also a good side dish for this tiffin. This steamed rice dumpling is made with broken rice. Added some seasoning and few red chillies for spice.Let us see how to make this.

Preparation time approx  25 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 1 cup broken rawa ( Iused idly rawa).
  • 3 tbsp grated fresh coconut
  • 2 cups of water.

For seasoning.

  • 2 tsp oil. (I used coconut oil)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp channa daal
  • 1 tsp urad daal
  • 2 red chillies.  Cut the red chillies in to pieces.
  • few chopped curry leaves.
  • A pinch of asafoetida

Method.

Heat a pan. Add oil. When it is hot add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Now add urad and channa dal. Let it become brown. Add curry leaves and asafoetida.  Now add the measured water. Add salt and grated coconut. Let it boil very well. Slowly add the rice rawa and mix well. Take care there should not be any lump. Switch off the stove.

In a steamer add water and boil.

When the kozhukkattai is  warm make round or ovel shape and arrange in a greased steamer plate. Keep this in steamer vessel or idly vessel. Close it with a lid. Steam cook for 15 minutes.

Switch off gas. Serve with chutney or mango chammandhi or sambar or any curry of your choice.
