I have tasted this daal in one of my friend’s house. My children are very fond of any kind of daals. I tried smoky daal at home. We need small piece of charcole for this smoky flavour. Let us see how to make this daal.
Preparation time approx 20 to 25 minutes.
- 1/2 cup channa daal.
- 3 bif size tomatoes.
- 4 to 5 pods of garlic
- 1 tsp red chilly powder.(spicy one)
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder.
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida
- 1/2 tsp sugar or jaggery. optional
- 1/2 tsp rasam powder .this is optionsal. I like the taste with rasam powder.
- 1 tsp daal masala or 1/2 tsp coriander powder and 1/4 tsp dhaniya powder.
- salt to taste.
- 3 tbsp ghee
- 1/2 tsp jeera
- few curry leaves
- coriander leaves to garnish.
Soak the channa daal for 2 to 3 hours. Pressure cook this with chopped tomatoes. Keep aside. (We can add tomatoes when we are doing seasoning.) For time saving i pressure cooked.
Heat a pan. Add ghee, When it is hot add jeera. Let it fry. Now add chopped garlic .Let the garlic become brown. Then add asafoetida and curry leaves, turmeric powder ,daal masala or other powders mentioned in the ingredients and chilly powder. Mix well. Add salt and sugar, ( at this stage we can add tomatoes and cook well if we are not pressure cooking tomatoes with daal ).
Add the cooked daal. Add water according to the consistency of the daal. Boil for a minute and switch off the stove.
Take one or two pieces of charcoal in a bowl.
Add 1/2 tsp ghee.
When smoking is started coming keep the bowl inside the pan above daal
Close it with a lid.
Let the smoke spread for few minutes. Take out the bowl.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with rice or roti.
