chakka aviyal or raw jackfruit curry

Chakka means jackfruit in malayalam. Being a keralite i love chakka in any form. My gtrand mother used to make different variety dishes from jackfruit. Even we will remove the skin of this and used the inner part for making subzi. Today i got some raw jack fruit. I love all curries made with raw jackfruit. My husband requested me to make aviyal with this. Aviyal is a very popular dish from Kerala. It is a mix of various vegetables. I have made aviyal with jackfruit today. It is a very good side for plain rice.

Let us see how to make this simple yummy curry.

Preparation time approx 20 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 10 big piece of raw jackfruit.

  • 1 drumstick cut in to log pieces.
  • 1/2 cup long gourd or padavalam cut in to long pieces.
  • 1/2 raw mango peel the skin and cut in to long pieces.( if it is very sour add less if it is less sour add more )
  • 3 red chillies
  • 2 green chilles
  • 1/4 cup grated  fresh coconut.
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste.
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil.( it is an unavoidable ingredient).
  • few chopped curry leaves.

Method.

Peel and cut cucumber, long gourd and drumsticks  in to long little thick pieces.Remove the skin of raw mango and cut in to long pieces.Remove seeds from jack fruit and cut in to little thick long pieces.

Grind grated fresh coconuts, green chillies, red chillies and jeera in to a paste adding very little water and keep aside.

Now cook all the vegetables adding 1 cup of water. Add salt and turmeric powder. Or pressure cook everything for one whistle.Take care it should not over cook.

Once the vegetables are cooked add ground masala and mix well. Switch of the stove and add coconut oil and chopped curry leaves mix well.

Serve with hot rice. I like to eat this aviyal with idly , dosa and adai.
