Kathirikka(brinjal) gothsu without onion.

There are many method of making gothsu. Some people are adding moong daal for making this gothsu. I have already posted a variety of kathirikka gothsu in my blog. Kathirikka means egg plant.Today i made little gravy type of gothsu which goes well with Idly, dosa, venpongal etc. I have not used onions today to make this gothsu. If you like to add onions in your gravy you can add . We can store the masala powder for few weeks and use this for making dry subji’s and stuffed kathirikka fry.

Preparation time approx 15 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 200 gram  violet  kathirikka ( i used small size).
  • Amla size tamarind soaked in water and take the juice.
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder.
  • A small piece of jaggery.

for the masala.

  • 1 1/2 tbsp coriander seeds.
  • 1 tbsp channa daal
  • 1tsp urad daal.
  • 6 red chillies.( adjust according to your taste.)
  • 1tsp thil. ( white or black)
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida or a small piece of stone asafoetida.
  • salt to taste.

for seasoning.

  • 2tbsp thil oil.
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds.
  • 1/4 tsp  methi seeds.
  • few curry leaves.

Method.

Cut the brinjals in to small pieces and put in water. ( otherwise colour will change)

In a pan dry fry all the indredients mentioned in masala one by one. Powder this coarsely and keep.

Pressure cook kathirikka or brinjal adding 1/4 cup of water for one whistle and keep aside for cooling. Mash the kathirikka with hands without any lumps. Do not grind or use hand blender taste will differ.

Take out the juice from tamarind. Make it in to a thin juice.( i have added 1 cup of water and took the thin jucie).

Heat the oil in a pan and add mustard seeds.Let it splutter then add methi  seeds and curry leaves. Let themethi seeds become brown.

(If you are adding onions add chopped onions in this stage and fry till it changes colour. I have not used onions today to make this dish)

Now add the kathirikka and tamarind water. Add turmeric powder and salt. Let it boil well. Add jaggery. Then add the powdered masala to the curry and mix well. If the consistency of the gravy is very thick add little more water and boil. Once it is boiled well switch off the stove and serve.
