Red coconut chutney.

Coconut chutney is a very popular condiment which is made with fresh grated coconut. We can make different varieties of chutney’s with coconut. Today i tried restaurant style red chutney which is served with idly, dosa, paniyaram, aappam, kozhukkattai etc. It is very easy to make . Let us see how to make this chutney.

Preparation time approx 10 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 1 cup grated fresh coconut.
  • small piece of tamarind or 1/4 tsp tamarind paste.
  • 1 shallot peeled.
  • 5 to 6 red chillies. ( adjust according to your taste).
  • salt to taste.

For seasoning.

  • 1 tbsp oil.
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad daal. ( optional)
  • 1 small red chilly. ( optional)
  • curry leaves.
  • pinch of asafoetida.

Method.

Put all the ingredients other than seasoning items in a mixer jar. Add 1/4 cup of water and grind. Do not grind very smooth paste. If you find yout chutney is very thick add little more water and adjust the consistency. Take out from mixer jar. Heat oil and add mustard seeds. When it started spluttering add urad daal ( if you are using ) red chilly, curry leaves and asafoetida. Pour over the chutney. Serve with Idly , dosa, aappa, paniyaram etc.
