This recipe i learnt from my grand maa. When i was a small kid after making banana chips my paatty (grand maa) used to make thoran or subji with the peeled skin of plantain banana or nendran kaya tholi without fail. This subji is my grand maa’s one of the favorite dish. Do not use any other varitey of banana skin to make this thoran . This thoran is one of the simple traditional village type subji. We can make this with in few minutes. This thoran or subji we can have with plain rice as a side dish. Let us see how to make this.
Preparation time approx 15 minutes.
- 4 banana skin (Skin or outer peel skin of plantain or nendran kaya tholi.)
- 3 tbsp grated fresh coconut.
- 2 green chillies.
- 1/2 tsp jeera
- 1 tbsp coconut oil.
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds.
- 1/2 tsp channa daal
- 1/2 tsp urad daal.
- a pinch of asafoetida.
- few curry leaves
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- salt to taste.
Cut the skin or tholi in to very tiny pieces and put in water. Add 1 tbsp butter milk for discolorisation.
In a pressure cooker add little water. ( around 1/4 cup) Add the chopped peels. Add turmeric powder and salt. Cook for a whistle. You can steam or cook in open pan with water also.
In a pan add oil. When it is hot add mustard seeds. Let then splutter nicely. Add both the daals, chopped green chillies,curry leaves and asafoetida. Fry till the daals turn brown. Now add the cooked plantain banana skin. Fry for for few seconds.
Crush the grated coconut, jeera and green chillies. Add to thesubji and mix well.
Switch off the stove.
