Snake gourd or pdavalam or podalankai or parwal is high in water contend fibrous vegetable. It is good for weight loss also. We used to make koottu, mulagoottal and fry with this. Today i tried chutney. This one is little spicy and goes well with Idly, dosa, paratha etc. Let us see how to make this easy chutney.
Preparation time approx 15 to 20 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup peeled chopped snake gourd.
- 5 to 6 green chillies. ( adjust according to your taste)
- 1 tbsp channa daal.
- 1tbsp urad daal
- a small piece of ginger.
- 3 tbsp grated coconut .
- 1 tbsp fried grams.
- a very small piece of tamarind or 1/4 tsp tamarind paste.
- salt to taste.
- 1 tbsp coriander leaves. ( optional)
- 1 pod of garlic. ( optional but this gives different taste).
- 1 tbsp any cooking oil
For seasoning.
- 1 tsp oil.
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds.
- 1/4 tsp urad daal.
- 1/4tsp channa daal.
- few curry leaves.
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida.
Method.
Peel the skin of snake gourd cut in to pieces.
Heat oil add channa and urad daal. let it become brown Now add garlic saute for few seconds. Add green chillies. Fry for few seconds and add snake gourd. If you are adding tamarind piece add now. or paste you can add while grinding. On medium heat fry this. Cover and cook. Now add coconut fry and take out. Add fried channa daal or chutney daal, salt, coriander leaves. When it is cool grind it together. Do not make in to very fine paste.
Heat oil for seasoning. When it is hot add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Add both the daals and let them become brown add curry leaves and asafoetida. Pour over the chutney.
