Obbattu or paruppu poli is one of the popular sweet dish in Karnataka and tamil nadu. This poli is a must for festivals like aavaniavattam, new year etc. I have already posted another 2 varaieties of poli in my blog. This one is different. I used channa daal, jaggery and cocont for filling and all purpose flour for the outer covering. Let us see how to make this easy poli or obbattu.
Preparation time approx 30 minutes.
soaking time 2 to 3 hours.
Ingredients.
- 1 cup channa daal.
- 1 cup grated jaggery.
- 1/3 cup grated coconut. ( i used little more as my husband like more coconut in this.)
- 1 heaped cup all purpose flour or maida.
- little rice flour for dusting.
- ghee to make poli.
- 1 tsp powdered cardamom .
- thil oil for mixing the batter. ( you can use sunflower oil or ghee).
- 2 tsp turmeric powder.
- a pinch of salt.
Method.
Soak channa daal for 2 to 3 hours. Pressure cook . It should be cooked not mushy . Keep aside.
Melt jaggery adding 1/4 cup of water. Strain it to remove impurities.When channa daal came to room temparature add this jaggery water, cardamom poeder and grind it smoothly.
Heat a tawa add little oil or ghee. Pour the batter and fry it. Keep on stirring this. It will become non sticky and a lump. Switch off the stove. Keep this aside for cooling.
Take a big bowl. Add allpurpose flour, turmeric powder and a pinch of salt. Mix well. Add little by little water and make a dough. Add thill oil and make the batter very smooth a piable. Cover this for 15 minutes and keep aside.
Make equal portion of ball from channa daal mixture, Keep this aside.
After 15 minutes add little more oil and mix the batter weel. It should be verysmooth in texture.
Make equal balls of this batter,
Take one ball of dough and dust the dough in rice flour . Make round shape like puri. Keep the channa daal balls in the middle and cover it with the dough.
Dust the balls in rice flour and press it with hands.
Using roti roller or bin make like roti. Do not make very thin polis.
Heat a non stick tawa.When it is hot add one poli and cook on slow flame. When one side is cooked flip it and pour little ghee all over the pilo. Add ghee on other side also . Remove from stove and serve.
