Kurukku Kalan

Kurukku Kalan:

Kurukku Kalan is a famous traditional dish of Kerala and it is normally a part of onam menu.Kalan is a mix of spices,curd,yam and plantain banana.It goes very well with rice.

Preparation time: approx 30 minutes:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cup sour thick curd
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 plantain banana or nendran kaya
  • 150 gram of yam or Chena
  • 1 tsp  pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • 3 green chillies
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 spoon turmeric powder
  • For Seasoning:
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 red chillies:
  • Curry leaves

Method:

Cut the vegetables in to small cubes

In a heavy bottom pan add the vegetables, turmeric powder, pepper powder, chilly powder,salt and a cup of water. Cook the vegetables.

In the mean time grind the grated coconut ,green chillies and jeera by adding water, make into a smooth paste.

When the vegetables are cooked add thick curd and mix very well.In the slow flame let the curd become  thick mixture.

Stir in between.

Then add the ground coconut paste and mix.

Cook for 2 more minutes.

Heat coconut oil add mustard seeds.when done add red chillies and curry leaves and pour over the curry.
