Thalakam. (Mixed vegg curry without onion garlic)

Thalakam

Thalakam is one  of the tradition dish of south India. It is a mix of vegetables and spices and coconut. It’s called ezhu curry kuzhambu which means 7 vegetables curry. In Kerala on Thiruvathira festival this curry is making. Thiruvathira is celebrated in the month of Dec/Jan in Kerala and Tamilnadu.I always love this curry with plain hot rice. I have given commonly used vegetables here. We can use any 7 vegetables from this. If mochai or field beans is available we can use .  Today i have not used mochai and kavath. It was not available here so i have not added mochai and kavath.

Preparation time approx 30 minutes

Ingedients:

1.Yellow pumpkin
2.Raw banana
3.Chembu(colocasia or arbi)
4.Chenai or Yam
5.Koorkai or arrowroot
6.Avarakka or broad beans
7.Potato

8.kavath(kwath)if available

9.field beans or mochai if available

Any 7 vegetables we can use from this.

1 cup coconut gratings

Lemon size tamarind

Seasoning

2 tbsp coconut oil

Curry leaves 2 strings

 

 

Method:

Cut all vegetables in to small pieces.

 

Squeeze juice from tamarind.(soak it in water and squeeze)
Cook everything in tamarind water,salt and haldi.

Dry fry
1/2 tsp while thil
Fry in oil
2 tsp raw rice
2 tsp urad dhal
1 tbsp channa dhal
3/4 tbsp dhaniya
A pinch methi
A small piece of asafoedia or 1/4 spoon asafotedia powder
9 red chillies

Dry fry thil and keep.

Heat the pan. Add 1 tsp oil. Add rice fry till it changes color.Take out rice and keep.Now add urad and channa dhal.Let the urad and channa dhal become brown in color.One by one fry all items in oil. Do not fry everything together.

 

Put  thil and all other masala items  in a mixi and powder it. Then add 1 cup fresh  coconut and grind. Add water and make it into  a fine paste.
Add the ground masala to the curry.

Let it boil for 2 more minutes.

Heat 2 tbsp coconut oil add mustard when it started crackling add curry leaves and pour over curry.
