Ammini Kozhukkattai or Steamed rice balls

Ammini kozhukkattai

One of the traditional dish from South India which is very healthy. Made with very few items. No curd, no soda, no eno. Only rice flour and seasonings. This is a steamed food. No need of any side dish. You can have it like this for breakfast or as evening snack or for dinner also

Preparation time approx 45 minutes

  • 1 cup rice flour( I used idiyappam flour)
  • Water to mix
  • Salt to taste 1/2 tsp oil or ghee

Seasoning

  • Oil 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds
  • Green chillies
  • 1/2 tsp Urad and channa dhal
  • Curry leaves
  • HingMethodIn a vessel add rice flour. Salt and 1/2 tsp oil or ghee. Mix itIn a pan boil 3 to 4 cups of water. Let it boil .

    Slowly add this boiling water to rice flour. Mix it with a spatula.

Make thick dough like chappathi.

Once you mix the dough knead with hands. Apply little oil on your hands. Make small balls from this.In the mean time add water to idly cooker or a pan. Heat this.
Apply oil to idly plate or dhokla plate or a plate.
After making round balls arrange the rice balls  in idly plate.

Steam cook for 10 to 15 minutes

In a kadai add oil. When it is hot add mustard seeds then urad and channa dhal. Add green chillies , hing and curry leaves.

Add cooked rice balls. Saute.IMG_6292.JPG

Option

Instead of green chillies we can add red chilly powder for spicy version.
