Rava kichdi

Rava kichdi

Rava kichdi is one of the most  popular breakfast and lunch box item of South India. It is prepared with suji or semolina or bombay rava, onion, tomato and vegetables with generous amount of ghee.I prefer to eat without any side dish.We can make coconut chutney as side dish.

Preparation time 30 minutes approx


  • 1 cup roasted rava(in a tsp oil fry rava without changing color)
  • 1 big onion chopped
  • 1 tomato chopped
  • 2 tbsp frozen peas
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 green chilies chopped
  • A pinch of turmeric (optional)
  • 21/2 cup water

For seasoning

  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil(Add generous amount of ghee or oil for best result)
  • 1/2 tsp  mustard
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp channa dal
  • 3 green chilies chopped
  • salt to taste.
  • Curry leaves


In a pan heat oil.Add mustard. When it starts sputtering add urad and channa dal. When it turns brown add green chilies and curry leaves.Then  add chopped onion.Saute till it is transparent.
Add tomato.Fry for few minutes let it cook  well.Now add frozen peas,turmeric powder and salt.Add fried rava and saute.
Measure the water and boil it in a closed pan..
Now add the boiling water to the rava mix. Slowly mix very well without forming lumps.

Close it and cook.Mix well and switch off gas.

Opt..you can add any veggies of your choice with tomato and onion.

We can add fried cashew nuts.
