Drumstick Erisseri

Erisseri is a traditional dish of Kerala especially during festivals. There are many varaities of erisseri.  Raw banana and yam combination is most popular combination for erisseri. I haves tasted drumstick  erisseri after marriage only. My mother in law makes very tasty erisseri with drumstick. Southern kerala side erisseri is a side dish for rice. Where as my mum in law makes it as a main gravy for plain rice. Coconut is fried till brown and then added to this curry at the end, which gives such a pleasant aroma & taste to this dish. Let us see how to make this simple dish.

 

Preparation time approx 25 minutes.

Ingredients.

  • 3 long fresh drumstick cut in to long pieces.
  • 1 cup fresh coconut gratings.( if you want  reduce the quantity little)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste.
  • 1 tbsp pepper powder
  • 4 red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp jeera

For seasoning.

  • 1/2 cup grated fresh coconut.
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad daal
  • 1/2 tsp channa daal
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida
  • few curry leaves.

Method.

Cut the drumsticks in to long pieces.

Heat a 2 cups of water add the drumsticks, turmeric powder and pepper powder.

Cook the drumstick  . In the mean time grind fresh coconut, red chillies and jeera in to a fine paste adding little water.

Once the drumsticks cooked very well add the gound masala. Adjust the water consistency according to the gravy.

Heat coconut oil add seasoning one by one. When mustard seeds stared spluttering add daals. Let it become brown. Now add curry leaves. Add coconut gratings fry till it become brown. ( you can fry coconut separately also ).

Finally add asafoetida and pour over the gravy.
