som tam salad or Raw papaya salad

Som tam salad is very famous in Thailand. I lived in Bangkok  few years. I learnt this recipe from one of my friend there.I have avoided fish sauce since i am a vegetarian. Let us see how to make this simple  spicy salad.

Preparation time approx 15 minutes.


  • 1 small  or half raw papaya,
  • 1 small carrot.
  • 1 or 2 long beans
  • 2 pods of  garlic
  • 1/2 cup  roasted crushed peanuts
  • 6 or 7 cherry tomatoes, or1 big tomato
  • 3 or 4 green or riped chillies
  • 1/2 tsp  jaggery,
  • 1 tsp tamarind water
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • salt to taste

Wash and scrape the  papaya or cut into very thin long strips. I used different scraper to scrape papaya.
Scrape carrot or cut into thin long strips
Cut long beans into long pieces.
Cut tomatoes in to long pieces or cherry tomatoes in to half

In a mortor , pound garlic,jaggery,green chilies. Let them crush a little. Then pound the raw papaya,carrots .Crush it. It should not mash. Then add tomatoes. Crush it. Let  the tomatoes release the juice.Do not mash tomatoes. just crush a little. Put everything in a bowl add salt soya sauce then roasted and crushed peanuts mix well .
