Koottu curry is a very popular side dish served for festivals and marriages or any celebrations at Kerala.Koottu curry recipe is made with black channa or kadala and yam, white pumpkin, plantain cooked along with coconut. It is a dry dish served as accompaniment .There are different methods of making this in Kerala. We can make with yam plantain and black channa. Some people are adding yellow pumkin also.
I am following my mothers recipe. Let us see how to make this simple dish.
Preparation time approx .20 minutes
Ingredients.
- 1 raw plantain cut in to small pieces
- 1/4 cup black channa soaked over night and cooked.
- 1 cup white pumpkin cut in to small pieces.( you can adjust the quantity of vegetables according to your taste.)
- 1 cup yam cut in to small pieces.
- 1/2 cup plus 1/4 cup grated fresh coconut.
- 1/2 tsp jeera
- 1 1/2 tsp red chilli powder.( adjust according to taste)
- 1 tsp pepper powder.
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
For seasoning
- 3 tbsp coconut oil.
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds.
- 1/2 tsp channa daal.
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida
- few curry leaves
Method.
Soak the black channa over night and pressure and keep aside.
Cut and cook the yam, white pumpkin and plantain pieces with salt, turmeic powder, red chilli powder, and pepper powder adding little water. ( I pressure cooked this for 2 whistles and released the pressure). Add cooked channa. Mix well.
In the mean time grind 1/2 cup grated fresh coconut with jeera . Add little water make a smooth paste. Add this to the curry and mix well.
In a pan add coconut oil and heat . When it is hot add add mustard seeds. Let it crackle. Now add channa daal. Let it become brown add curry leaves and asafoetida. Fry for seconds and add 1/4 cup grated coconut. Fry this till the coconut become brown. Add this seasing to the curry, Mix well . Serve as a side dish for rice.
Tips.
If you want you can add yellow pumkin also.
you can increase or decrease the quantity of other vegetables.
