Vazhakkai podimas recipe is one of the popular side dish from Tamil nadu and Kerala. Podimas means mash . Vazhakkai podimas is a stir fry of mashed banana. Since i never like the mashed version i genreally grated the banana after cooking. This can be served as a side dish with plain rice. Let us see how to make this.
Preparation time approx 20 minutes.
Ingredients.
- 2 big raw banana.
- 4 tbsp grated fresh coconut. (adjust according to your taste)
- 1 inch grated ginger
- 2 chopped green chillies.
- 1 tbsp lemon juice.
- 2 tbsp coconut oil. ( you can use any other cooking oil)
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp channa daal.
- 1 tsp urad daal.
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida.
- few chopped curry leaves.
- salt to taste.
Method.
In an Idly cooker steam cook the banana’s. Open the lid and check. If you are inserting your knife or a pin it should go inside the banana smoothly. Do not over cook.
Take out the banana’s. Peel it .
Grate this cooked banana in a grater and keep aside.
Heat the oil. Add mustard seeds. Let them splutter. Now add both the daals, green chillies and grated ginger. Saute well. Let the daals become brown. Add asafoetida and chopped curry leaves. Pour this over the cooked grated banana. Add salt, grated fresh coconut and lemon jucie. Mix well. Serve with plain rice.
Tips.
Instead of grating banana you can mash it. If you are mashing it after seasoning add this mashed banana to it then add salt, grated cococnut and lemon juice. Mix well. Switch off the stove.
