I have already posted one variety of thakkali or tomato kuruma in my blog. But this kuruma is very much different and with in 10 minutes we can make. I have tasted this kuruma on a roadside shop at Coimbatore. With very few ingredients we can make this thakkali kuruma. We can have this kuruma with Idly, dosa, Idiyappam, Aappam roti, puri etc . Let us see how to make this Kuruma.
Preparation time approx 10 minutes.
Ingredients.
- 1 chopped onion or around 1/2 cup.
- 1/4 cup chopped onion for seasoning
- 3 medium size tomatoes.
- 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
- 5 green chillies.( adjust according to your taste)
- 1 or 2 pods of garlic
- 1 tsp chilly powder
- 1/2 tsp kashmiri chilly powder.
- 2 small pieces cinammon
- 1/2 tsp saunf or fennel seeds plus 1/2 tsp fennel seeds for grinding.
- 3 cloves
- 5cashew nuts
- 1 small star anise
- 1/ tsp khus khus ( i have not added instead added one extra cahew nut)
- 1/ 2 tsp turmeric powder.
- few curry leaves.
- oil for seasoning.
- salt to taste
Method.
In a small cooker add 1 tbsp oil and heat. Add 1/2 cup of chopped onions. Saute for few seconds. When it is shiny add 3 chopped tomatoes. Add salt, one small piece of cinnamon, 1 clove, garlic, turmeric powder, green chillies ( i have added 5 chillies. You can adjust according to your tastes. ) and chilly powders . Finally add 1/2 cup of water. Pressure cook for 2 whistles.
In the mean time grind coconut, one piece of cinnamon, 1 clove , 1/2 tsp fennel seeds and a small star anise. If you are using khus khus soak it for little time and add to coconut. ( I have not added kus khus . Instead i used 5 cashew nuts. If you are using khus khus you can use 3 cashews instead of 5 pieces.)
Add little water and make it in to a fine paste.
Now open the cooker and grind everything in to a puree and keep aside.
In a pan add little oil . When it is hot add 1/2 tsp saunf or fennel seeds, one clove, and chopped curry leaves. Let it fry now add the tomato puree and coconut paste. Add water and adjust the consistency. Let it boil and switch off the stove.
Serve with Idly or dosa.
