This traditional south Indian Appalam/ Pappad kuzhambu is tangy spicy and sweet. When you don’t have any vegetables at home this curry will comes handy.
It is all most similar to vetha kuzhambu. Appala kuzhambu goes well with hot rice and very easy to make with very little ingredients No need of onions and garlic to make this curry.

Ingredients
6. Urad Appalam or pappad
1. cup medium thick tamarind water
3. tbsp Sam bar powder
1 1/2. tsp rice flour
Hand full of gooseberry vathal. ( available in grocery shops)
Red Chilli powder to adjust spice level
1. heaped tsp jaggery powder
Salt to taste.
1/2. tsp turmeric powder
5. tbsp thil oil. ( tastes good only with thil oil)
1. tsp mustard seeds
1. tsp methi seeds
Small piece stone asafoetida or power
Few curry leaves.
Method
In a heavy bottom pan add thil oil. Once it is hot break the appalams and deep fry. Keep aside.
In the same oil add mustard seeds. When it start crackling add gooseberry vathal and hing. Fry it.
Then add methi seeds and fry till it turns brown. Add curry leaves.
Now add tamarind water. Add salt and turmeric powder. Add salt to salt. Let it boil. Add little water to rice flour make a liquid and add to curry.
Add jaggery.
Take sambar powder add little water and make paste.
If you are adding sambar powder like this lumps will not form.
Add water to adjust consistency. Once it started boiling add fried Pappad. Boil and switch off the stove.
