Authentically it is prepared with grilled brinjals. Some people fry the brinjals in little oil. Today I have baked the brinjals and made this Gotsu which is a very simple and healthy method. Gotsu with samba rice is offered as a prasadam in Chithambaram temple. It needs very few ingredients. Gotsu is a good combination for pongal, idly and any variety of dosa or roti.
Preparation time approx 45 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 big brinjal
- 9 red chillies
- 1/4 spoon asafotedia
- Small lemon size tamarind–soak in water take out juice and keep
- 1tsp jaggery
Seasoning
- 2 tbsp thil oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard
- 1/4 tsp methi seeds
- Some curry leaves.
Method
Roast the brinjal on fire (chuttathu). Or you can bake.
Remove the skin of brinjal.
Chop into pieces.
Insert the red chillies in a skewer and roast this on fire. Take care not to burn.
Mix brinjal pieces, salt, asafotedia and jaggery.
Mash everything very nicely. Do not grind.
Heat little oil.
Add mustard. Once it starts crackling add methi seeds and curry leaves.
Now add the tamarind juice. Let it cook till the raw smell goes.
At this stage add mashed brinjal mix.
Add little water according to the thickness of the gotsu. Let it boil.
When it is ready switch off the stove.
