Idly rawa and dal kozhukkattai.
Kozhukkattai is a traditional breakfast item of South India. It is a steamed dish with rice rawa. We have to soak the rice, strain and dry it, then powder it for making rice rawa. Today instead of doing all of this, I made kozhukkattai with ready made Idly rawa. Added little thuar dal and channa dal for a healthier and tastier version. This is a good lunch box item for all. There is no need of any side dishes for this kozhukkattai because it is spicy. But coconut chutney or mulaga podi is good combo for this dish. Let us see how to make this.
Preparation time approx 25 minutes.
Ingredients.
- 1 cup idly rawa. ( store bought).
- 1/4 cup leveled thuar dal
- 2 tbsp channa dal
- 6 red chillies
- 1/4 cup grated fresh coconut. ( optional). I have not added.
- Salt to taste.For seasoning
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard
- 1/2 tsp urad dah
- 1/2 tsp channa dal
- 1/4 tsp asafotedia
- Some curry leaves.Method.
Soak both dals for 10 to 15 minutes along with red chillies.
Grind these coarsely using a mixer . Do not make a soft paste. Do not add much water to grind.Take the ground dal in a vessel add salt, asafotedia and exactly 2 cups of water. (double the amount of idly rawa). Mix well and keep aside.
Heat a pan and add oil. When it is hot add mustard seeds. Let it crackle .Add both the dals and curry leaves. Let the dals become brown. Now add the ground paste of dals .Do not add extra water.
Let the mixer started boiling. You can see the shiny texture of dals. If you are adding coconut gratings add now. I have not used coconut.
Now in this stage add idly rawa and mix well. Close it with a lid for 1 minute.
Mix the batter . It will become a dough like consistency. Let all the water evoparates. Switch off the stove.
In the same time add little water to a steamer or pan or idly cooker. Let it boil.
Grease the idly plate or steamer. Now when the dough is hot itself make round balls or any shape as you wish. Arrange these in the idly plate and steam this for 12 to 15 minutes.Serve hot spicy kozhukkattai like that or with mulagapodi or coconut chutney.
