Cabbage chutney

One of the healthy easy side dish made with cabbage for South Indian tiffin items like Idly,rawa idly, any kind of dosa variates, parathas, kozhukkattai etc and plain rice. We can make this chutney with in 15 minutes.Cabbage is  a good source of fiber and other vitamins.

Let us see how to make this chutney.

Preparation time approx. 15 minutes.


  • 1 cup of chopped cabbage.
  • 2 tbsp urad dal.
  • 1 small onion. ( optional)
  • 5 green chillies
  • A small piece of ginger.
  • .1 tbsp fried gram
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh coconut
  • Very small piece of tamarind.
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves.
  • 1 tsp oil for frying.

For seasoning. 


  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp channa dal
  • pinch of asafotedia
  • Few curry leaves.
  • 1 small red chilly.



In a pan add 1 tsp oil. When it is hot add chopped green chillies ,ginger and tamarind piece.Saute for few seconds .Add urad dal fry till it turn brown colour. Now add chopped onion. Let it fry . No need to change the color. Add chopped cabbage and saute for 2 minutes. Now add grated fresh coconut ,coriander leaves. Saute switch off stove. Let it cool. Now grind everything with roasted gram. Add water and make into coarse paste.

Heat oil. Add mustard seeds. When it start crackle add urad and channa dal. Let it become golden colour. Add curry leaves and asafotedia. Switch off stove pour this over chutney.
